8:30am - 2:30pm

A one-day virtual event for parents and professionals

On November 9, from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm central standard time, NACAC will present a virtual conference on trauma-responsive strategies for parents and professionals. See below for session descriptions and speakers. Attendees can participate live or listen to a recorded version of workshops. Recordings will be available through December 31.

Trauma-Responsive Parenting Strategies is designed for parents and professionals and features the following sessions:

The Impact Trauma Has on the Brain: It is crucial professionals and parents understand the impact trauma has on a child’s brain. Some of the common behaviors that we see in our children can often look like willful disobedience when, in fact, they are symptoms of the brain injuries incurred in utero and in the early years of development. Presenters: Kim Stevens and Barb Clark, North American Council on Adoptable Children

Setting the Stage for Relational Parenting: Children and adolescents who have experienced trauma need a different type of parenting approach other than traditional consequence- and punitive-based parenting. Jamole will share the reasons why these approaches are more effective and give strategies of how to use them. Presenter: Jamole Callahan, North American Council on Adoptable Children

Building Attachment: Building or rebuilding attachment with children who have experienced loss requires parents to set aside their needs and expectations and focus on what the child is trying to teach them through actions and affect. The work requires acknowledging your own trauma history and attachment style, understanding the child’s, and being intentional about adapting to meet the child’s needs. Kim will share strategies and tools that can help. Presenter: Kim Stevens, North American Council on Adoptable Children

Trauma-Responsive Strategies: Understanding the reason and philosophy behind these strategies is the first step, but implementing and sticking with them offer additional challenges. Barb will use real life experiences and humor to help professionals and parents find the tools needed to adjust to this unique way of parenting. Presenter: Barb Clark, North American Council on Adoptable Children
